Ballroom/Latin American/Salsa/Jive

  • Waltz: A slow and romantic dance - one of the most popular of the Ballroom dances. Waltz is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long, flowing movements, continuous turns, and rise & fall. Graceful and elegant, Waltz dancers glide around the floor almost effortlessly.
  • Quickstep: A fun and lively dance danced to up-tempo jazz/swing music. This dance has a lot of movement on the dance floor, with many advanced patterns including hops, runs, quick steps with a lot of momentum, and rotation. The tempo of quickstep dance is rather brisk. The Quickstep is elegant like the Foxtrot, and should be smooth and glamorous. The dancers should appear to be very light on their feet.
  • Foxtrot: A beautiful smooth progressive dance characterized by graceful, flowing movements across the dance floor. With continuous foot passing actions, heel turns, weaves and fallaways.
  • Tango: A passionate and powerful dance with staccato action and sharp head movements.
  • Viennese Waltz: Elegant and beautiful with natural and reverse turns. The most well-known of all composers of Viennese Waltz music is Johann Strauss, responsible for such notorious works as the Blue Danube and Tales From the Vienna Woods.
  • Social Foxtrot (Rhythm): Provides a good foundation for all dances and is often called the "get-acquainted" or "first impression" dance. It is danced to a Foxtrot beat but is simpler, and thus eaiser to learn, than Foxtrot.
  • Cha Cha: A cheeky dance requiring attitude – one of the most popular latin dances. Cha Cha is either danced to authentic Latin music, or more contemporary Latin Pop or Rock. The music is energetic and with a steady beat.
  • Rumba: Sexy and romantic. Some dancers consider rumba the most erotic and sensual Latin dance, for its relatively slow rhythm and the hip movement.
  • Jive: Energetic and hugely popular dance to very fast swing music.
  • Samba: The carnival dance to medium tempo Brazilian Latin music with strong downbeat. Popular steps include bota foga, samba walk and voltas.
  • Paso Doble: Dramatic Flamenco style dance with the man portraying the matador and the lady as the cape.
  • Salsa is a Spanish word, which when translated literally means "sauce". Hot, spicy, and full of exotic Latin flavour, the dance Salsa is true to its name – exhilarating and great fun!
